Catch, Kill or Release

Leigh Mill lake is regularly stocked with top-quality, hard-fighting rainbow and brown trout raised at our supplier's hatchery at Duncton Mill in Sussex. Mostly weighing from 1.5 to 3 lbs, larger specimens are stocked from time to time.

Principal stockings are every few weeks in spring, early summer and autumn with occasional top-ups to maintain population. Last season over 1000 rainbows and browns were stocked.

The trout feast on nymphs, fry and terrestrials and there are good hatches of damsels, sedges, lake olives and alders.

We like to encourage catch and release particularly with our trout. Barbless or de-barbed hooks should be used and gentle handling is vital. A limit of ten fish per visit may be caught and released. Members wishing to take fish are limited to 4 per week, however it is recommended that no more than 2 fish be killed per day within the weekly limit.

Our catch averages and stocking intervals through five seasons to date can be made available on request.
